Cambridge English TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) is a series of qualifications for teachers of English as a foreign language. It tests candidates’ knowledge of notions related to language and language use, and the background to and practice of language teaching and learning. It focuses on the knowledge needed to teach children, teenagers and adults anywhere in the world.
The TKT is internationally recognised and can be taken by anyone willing to gain recognition for their knowledge and skills, regardless of their background or teaching qualifications. The aim of this test is to improve teacher’s confidence and job prospects.
Preparing for the TKT helps teachers understand:
- different teaching methodologies
- the ‘language of teaching’
- how to use the different resources available in the esl classroom
- the most important aspects of lesson planning
- classroom management methods
There are 5 modules which can be taken in any order, over any time period. The University of Cambridge issues a certificate for each module you complete.
The modules are:
TKT Module 1: Language and background to language learning and teaching.
TKT Module 2: Lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching.
TKT Module 3: Managing the teaching and learning process, including classroom management.
TKT CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning)
TKT YL: Young Learners
The TKT is aimed at native and non-native speakers of English. (Cambridge recommends a minimum language level of B1, however it is important to note that candidates at this level will find the language extremely challenging and are encouraged to attain a level of B1+ or higher).
The TKT has no entry requirements, such as previous teaching experience. It may also be taken by pre-service teachers, teachers who wish to refresh their teaching knowledge, and teachers who are moving to teaching English after teaching another subject.
Each module is tested by means of objective tasks, such as matching and multiple-choice, and consists of 80 questions.
At Abbey School, we organise one-to-one and group courses to prepare for these certifications.
For each module, we offer a 15-hour course taught by experienced teachers. In our courses we use official Cambridge material.
